Weed 101: The Art of Cannabis Connoisseurship
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Cannabis appreciation has evolved far beyond simple consumption into a sophisticated art form comparable to wine tasting or bourbon sampling. For those looking to elevate their experience, understanding the nuances of cannabis quality, storage, and consumption makes all the difference.
At the heart of cannabis connoisseurship lies careful bud inspection. Using magnification to examine trichomes—those tiny crystal structures containing cannabinoids and terpenes—reveals crucial information about potency and harvest timing. Milky trichomes indicate optimal harvest, while amber ones suggest higher CBN content with more sedative effects. The density of these trichomes often correlates directly with potency and flavor intensity.
The aromatics of cannabis deserve special attention, as terpenes provide both distinctive scents and influence effects. Breaking open a bud releases these aromatic compounds, with piney, lemony scents typically indicating uplifting varieties, while peppery or earthy notes may suggest more relaxing properties. Fascinatingly, your body's endocannabinoid system often guides you toward aromas that match what your system needs—a natural form of botanical intuition.
Proper storage and consumption methods dramatically affect the cannabis experience. UV-blocking containers paired with humidity control packs maintain freshness and potency, while low-temperature consumption preserves delicate terpenes that would otherwise be destroyed by excessive heat. Tools like hemp wick or plasma arc lighters enable these lower-temperature burns, resulting in richer flavor profiles and reduced tar production. For the true enthusiast, creating personal blends using specific ratios of different strains opens up a world of customized experiences tailored to individual preferences and needs.
Ready to transform your relationship with cannabis? Start paying attention to these details and discover a depth of experience you never knew existed. Your appreciation of this remarkable plant will never be the same.

Introduction to Cannabis Connoisseurship
Speaker 1Free audio. Post production by Alphoniccom.
Speaker 2Welcome to Cotman Crawford and the Jersey Guy podcast. Yo, all right, what's going on? So today we are doing another 420 edition episode, but this episode is going to be the Cannabis Connoisseurship. Yes, that is you, tom.
Speaker 3Yeah, let's do this.
Speaker 1So, what is?
Speaker 2Cannabis Connoisseurship. Right, what is Cannabis Connoisseurship? So you know how people are into their wine, their fine wines. They drink their wine, they do wine tasting, they go. It's a nice note of vanilla in there. It's a barrel, a little cherry. Same thing with your bourbon Bourbon to whiskey. They find scotch, a single malt.
Speaker 1And the same can be done with cannabis.
Speaker 2Same can be done with cannabis, and Tom is our connoisseur.
Speaker 2Yes, he is I actually it was kind of one of those things for me that happened on accident. I was, you know, I was smoking or whatever, and I happened to. The match kind of went out Right and it was like almost out. It was like very low temp. When I lit I tasted the flavor, I said whoa, why am I tasting these flavors? I never tasted in the in, you know, in the weed, before, right. And it was because I looked up, you know I I used ai. I said why is this? And they're like well, it's low temperature flame. If you want more low temperature flame, get hemp wick. So you know, I went down this whole thing. So right, I'll, I won't put it, give it to you guys in chronological order right, give you guys more of yeah, you know what.
Speaker 2So, basically, what this episode is going to, we're going to do. We're going to do like a full spectrum look of cannabis connoisseurship. You know how to evaluate the butts, proper storage, refined methods of consumption, whether you're seasoned or just leveling up, this one's about savoring the full experience.
Speaker 3So we want to start with the which part? What would be first? So about savoring the full experience?
Speaker 2So we want to start with the which part.
Speaker 3What would be first?
Bud Inspection and Trichomes
Speaker 2So the first is the bud inspection Okay, cool, you got to do the buds. You know where you get it from. You know you get it from.
Speaker 3you know your dispensary or if you don't have a friend or your homie, you get it, don't help me, you get it, you want to into it.
Speaker 2You take the jeweler's loop and you can actually inspect the bud and you look at it and you can actually see the trichomes. Trichomes if they're milky colored, that actually means that they were picked at the right time. If they're clear, that means they picked it too early, and if it's like got like an amber color, it's later. And it's actually a lot of the THC turns to CBN, which is like kind of like it makes you sleepy and relaxed.
Speaker 2And it is semi-psychoactive, but it's like a weaker version. Typically when you go to a dispensary you don't Most of it. I've always seen it's always been like milky colored, but you also see trichome density. Sometimes you take a bud and it looks like it's been dipped in sugar.
Speaker 1Right, what is that stuff?
Speaker 2What is that white stuff that they put on that? The THC and the terpenes? That's crazy. That's what you want.
Speaker 1You're adding more on top of what you're already smoking. What do you mean? So, in other words, I'm like that guy on that video. Are you all right? Yeah, yeah yeah.
Speaker 3No, no, no.
Speaker 2No, so I'm saying trichome density, the actual bud. You can see how dense that is Right. Right, it will look a typical one will be. You know, it'll be like frosted and some of them are like heavily frosted, right, and they grow that way and that's yeah.
Speaker 3They grow like that.
Speaker 2Because they bred the buds to you know to be. Some of them are high percentage. Wow, the one that you had was like 40%. That's very high. They had to selectively breed them through, kept selectively breeding to get a higher THC until they got that high THC. Also, I'm sure you know, with proper gardening techniques and all that stuff. Of course you know they get the plant to produce the proper nutrients to give it what it needs.
Terpenes and Aroma Profiles
Speaker 2But yeah, so that is something you look for Also. So the next step would be is smelling? Now, this is. There's actually a science behind smelling, but you know, people do, they smell. They smell like, oh, this is nice, but what actually happens is it actually the terpenes. That's what gives the buds their sense. You know, if you have like a, like a sativa, like a, typically they're very piney smelling, very lemony smelling, because those terpenes are more of the uplifting type terpenes, right, lemonine pinene, those are like your uplifting ones. So you see, those more sativas, that's the one that you.
Speaker 1You know you get stuff done in the house that way.
Speaker 3So the sativa is the more concentrating. Like for you to focus.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, that's issue more found in and those terpenes are also found in indicas, which is like a more relaxing type, right, but I try to stay away from that saying because we're finding now that, like you can have like a sleepy sativa, believe it or not, yeah, they're more introspective type, where you're kind of going out Right, not necessarily doing anything physical, you'd be right. But anyway, I was getting a little ahead of myself.
Speaker 1My fault. No, it's all right. No, no, no, it's okay.
Speaker 2So when you break it open, what happens is there's actually a scientific thing?
Speaker 1Yeah, I want to break it up and roll it and put it in a joint.
Speaker 2Sometimes you'll smell it and you go oh, that smells really good.
Speaker 1Other ones, you'll go. Oh, this is all right, it does.
Speaker 2Other ones, you go oh, this is all right, that's actually your endocannabinoid system that's reacting to it. Sometimes what will happen is is like, if you, if your body is like craving something, like maybe you're kind of sad or whatever, typically you'll be driven more to the ones that are like antidepressant, like those sativas. Right, it's a very weird thing, but there's a scientific method to sense the scent thing, though not that I don't know if that part is, it could be I, you know well, scent is very powerful yeah, you just know what's good yeah
Speaker 2but no but scent is very powerful yeah, but the actual terpenes. So like, okay, if you know someone that is like you know when they maybe they smoke too much, oh, freaking out man. You know someone that is like you know when they maybe they smoke too much oh freaking out man.
Speaker 2You know something like that happens. A trick is you could take peppercorns Right and you can break them up and smell them Right, and the pain from peppercorns is caraphylline, right. Caraphylline is actually what gives some, but it's peppery flavor or peppery smell, but that is a more calming one. So it actually brings something down just from smelling the peppercorn, like like you take like peppercorn, crush it up and put your finger to smell it, that your your nasal passages like smell the terpenes and it actually activates the, the terpenes, right oh, and that kind of balances out for you or you can suck on some peppercorns right or something Right.
Speaker 1You can do that too.
Speaker 2Yeah yeah, it's amazing what you can do but so so that's like also part of it so.
Speaker 1Right Pretty cool.
Speaker 2You know that's wild, so your body responds to it, but anyway, so you break it open and you want to do smell it. I just it's so different.
Speaker 1It's just like it's so pointy, you start learning what certain oranges are you know like?
Speaker 2again, as I mentioned, lemonine is a lemon-smelling one. It gives it a citrus smell. Terpenylene Terpenylene has like a little apple smell to it. What about the skunky ones? That's just a mixture of a bunch of them that give it that skunky flavor you get like that serious, you know crazy stinky bud. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, and some of them have a woodsy smelling Right. Some of them have a floral scent and I don't have all the terpenes written down on me now. I think we went over that in our previous time before.
Speaker 2But the point is is when you smell them? That's what you're trying to pick out. You know what I mean, right?
Speaker 1You know, listen, it's doing exactly what you were saying earlier about wine. It's doing exactly the same thing, but it's doing it in their own.
Speaker 3And then when you turn around and you're smelling these though it's one that is to your liking is what you should basically go with.
Speaker 2Yeah, I mean, if you want to do that. But you know you also, you read too you know, what. I mean but it's just, it's interesting.
Speaker 1It's something interesting that someone pointed out. I think the smell alone would judge whether or not you're going to take that one or not, and also you're going to check.
Proper Storage Techniques
Speaker 2Also when you break it open too, you're checking also, because you just break it open and you're going to check to see if it snaps or if it kind of Now again. Sativas and this is where the difference between sativas and indicas come into play, because the actual plant is different. A sativa is a tall plant. It has these finger-like leaves. The indica is a bush-like plant with fat leaves. Okay, so the actual buds do have different density. Indicas have a more dense nug as, like, sativas, are a little more fluffier. So when you break them open, you want to keep that into consideration too, but you want to check and make sure they're not too spongy. If they're too spongy, that means they didn't cure right. Right, the dispensary didn't cure right. I've never had a problem.
Speaker 2And if it got too dry, they over cure them or the package. There was a problem with the packaging and it dried out and that's not good either.
Speaker 3Yeah, now, when you go to the dispensaries and such do, they let you crack them open so you could see that stuff no, no, no, I know, I know that's the part that sucks. You gotta do that after you buy it, unfortunately so now let's say you turn around and you buy it and the butt isn't what you wanted it to be.
Speaker 2I wonder if they might have a return policy if it's bad quality.
Speaker 1As long as you didn't smoke it or do anything to it. Well, I mean, I throw it out anyway.
Speaker 2Yeah, I opened a bag. It's never happened, but if I opened a bag and it was like moldy, they'd probably throw it away. I would be like, hey, you know yeah yeah, like here's my receipt I just got this shit, like what the hell just happened.
Speaker 3Yes, my receipt says I was here, yeah, a half a few days ago, right, yeah, whatever it is, yeah, 10 minutes ago, right, exactly. Yeah, now, it being now is is the, the bud, the same? I guess we'll say the same idea as far as wine not as lengthy, because you said if it's moldy, but like if you certain ones that you would get that if they sat a little longer so I'm sure.
Speaker 2So that's funny you. You brought that up. That's something I was. I was just actually like cheese almost right yeah you can. So people that's something that's kind of gotten to new territory with people is like aging them, but like you can't age them like an age of one. You couldn't age it for like 10 years, you could only age it for like a year or maybe, or something like that.
Speaker 3You know that long. I didn't even think it was that long.
Speaker 1Eventually it's going to break down.
Speaker 2It's not going to be worth anything after that if oh yeah, like, maybe, like a year, you know, because the trichomes and stuff break down. But what you can do and that's where I'm going to go with the next segment, is storage. Okay, so there's a lot of different types of storage, but what you want is you want essentially, you want glass that is not clear, right, you don't want sunlight getting it, right, that's what you said. That black glass, yeah, I'll get into that, that's like top tier. I just want to give people first the basic okay, you know. So, like, if you're just looking for, if you're just looking for, storage, you want, you know, to be darker, you know. So there's no, it's not clear, you know. So uv can't penetrate. You want it to be airtight? Okay, definitely airtight, right, absolutely. But but also, and and then there's containers like myron glass. Myron glass is like top tier, that's like elite tier if you want it to store it's's called Black Glass or Myron Glass.
Speaker 2I've seen Infinity Jars too, as a company I've seen on Amazon. That's one I bought and basically what that is is it's a special glass that only lets in certain UV lights that actually help preserve the bud better, but you wouldn't put it directly in light because right, you wouldn't put it on the side.
Speaker 2It's kind of like you know if it's in a room that has windows but it's not getting direct sunlight. Yeah, it's probably fine that way. I keep mine still in the closet because I still am like I want to keep it dark you know, just in case, but just to be sure, yeah, so that's top tier.
Speaker 2and then this is this is the game changer. I think I'm such a big like believer in using Boveda packs. The Boveda packs are these little packs and they they're dual acting humidity control. So if it's too, if, if, if the jar is too moist or too dry, it levels it out. So they have different percentages. There's like 58 is like if you're, if you are like, okay, I guess you call a stick smoker, because there's like if you really smoke blunts, cones, joints, whatever you would, you would want the 58 if you were like a pipe smoker you know bowls, bongs 62 is better because you want a little bit more moist for that, you want a little bit drier for, but that's for they have. And then they have a higher one for like long-term storage or rehydration. Really Okay, yeah, if they're like rehydration, you use them for like two weeks, but then you want to pop in like a 58% or a 60%.
Speaker 3Okay, now when you put those in the packs in, do you put them on top of the weed or at the bottom of the jar? Either or you can put it sometimes standing up, sometimes on top of the bottom, it just needs to be in there because it's for the air, you know Okay.
Speaker 2But I'm a big believer in that because that keeps the bud fresh, it keeps the trichomes from breaking down, right, and actually keeps the flavor up of the, because that's where everything that you, that's where all the medicinal stuff, is Okay, gotcha, you know, that's where all the terpenes are in the THC, you know the rest is just kind of like plant matter, right, some of it's in the plant but most of it aren't the trichomes.
Speaker 3Okay, so Now is there any such thing like after you have the bud or whatever Cause? I remember like they would, you take the, the, the buds, and you would hang them upside down to get all the to hang, to get the THC to come to the rest of the bud that you're going to end up smoking.
Speaker 2I think that's for curing. Yeah Right.
Speaker 3But then do you do that when you go and you buy them, or is that like you say, if you, yeah, that's all, that's everything.
Speaker 2That's everything pre-done. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, the curing's all done and they do that all out there.
Speaker 1Right, they get that all done and then they put it out for sale.
Speaker 3Yeah, yeah. So then, basically, after you buy it, it's just a matter of, like you said, putting it in a jar.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, getting a pack in there. Those bring everything back to life, all the flavor all those things. It smells so much better, it tastes better.
Speaker 3Right, okay, okay. So now you, now, after we stored it, now, when we turn around and we're going to take it out to smoke it, right, do we need to put a new pack in the jar? No, no, no need to put a new pack in the jar, no, no, you, just the same one will last for, like yeah, until it gets hard.
Speaker 2When it starts getting hard, you throw another one, then you put the rest in, then put it in a grinder right, because you just grind it up in a 10 pack and it comes in its sealed package, okay, and you know that doesn't degrade as fast because you're not opening as often and the other packs are keeping the whole thing you know, all right, okay, no there's like it's a 10 pack, so if you have like one in, if you have like one jar or whatever, you still have another nine packs Got it and I think they last like several months or a year.
Speaker 3So then now, what Lou was saying like now, when you take out your bud, that it's sitting in the jar with that, when you take it out and you get rid of smoke, is it better to keep the buds whole or is it better to grind them oh no, and grind it down. Yeah yeah, but grind it down before you put it in the jar, yeah, and then throw the packs in there, so that this way it's already ground up.
Speaker 2Oh, no, no, you want to keep them.
Speaker 1Keep the bud in the jar, yeah right. So, then when you take the bud out and then you grind it up.
Speaker 3That's the way.
Speaker 1Smell it, yeah, yeah, yeah Smells nice.
Speaker 3Okay, I got you. I thought that keeps it in, if you already had the pack you put in, the hydration pack in there or the dehydrated pack in there, that then it would be a different. You know, I guess we'll say like how it just keeps it, Just keeps it fresh, yeah keep it fresh, so it makes it easier for you to smoke is the grinding right Okay.
Speaker 1So, any.
Speaker 2I've never seen a bad grinder. You know most of the grinders have the three, the three systems the grind part, the catch part and then the Keef catcher.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2I have that one, yeah, and most of them have that, and that's the basic one. And if anybody doesn't know what Keef is, keef is like, like, as we were talking about, they kind of shave off sometimes from just being shaken or whatever. They're very delicate.
Speaker 1Right, it goes right through the screen into the bottom. So what?
Speaker 2happens. There's a little screen and it catches all the trichomes and that's Keef. And then you, it's like having like this, it's like espresso, of cannabis.
Speaker 3You know what I mean. It's just so now, after. So the Keef, Keith, can you smoke that after? Yeah, you can mix it in. Oh, not smoke it after. I was going to say mix it in.
Speaker 2Some people you can.
Speaker 3Smoke it straight up.
Speaker 1Some people make a Keith hash. You probably can smoke it straight up, right?
Blending Strains and the 10-Pebble Method
Speaker 2They press the Keith Right. Make little bricks out of them. Nice, and you can smoke Keith hash, it's really strong.
Speaker 1Now that's going to be the later on the buzz you get from that, because it's just stronger. It's just like if you smoked like a does it go both ways for indica, and obviously for indica and for sativa?
Speaker 2yeah, but if but if you, but if you have different, unless you have a separate grinder for indica and separate grinder right, if you're mixing them, it's going to be something it's going to be like it's going to be like high. It's going to be a balanced blend, yeah unless you're well depending. If you smoke a lot of sativa, then there's going to be mainly sativa it all depends on, right, what's you ground up in it, right?
Speaker 2oh, that's cool. But yeah, grinders are good. So you know you wouldn't. I heard people using these electric grinders like like a herb grinder, like you're going to get it too fine, and what's going to happen is when you go to smoke it and we'll get into smoking methods too. When you, when you go to smoke it, it's going to happen is when you go to smoke it and we'll get into smoking methods too, when you go to smoke it, it's going to burn too hot and it's going to cook off everything even if you light it up at a lower heat yeah, because it's so fine it just catches, you know what I mean.
Speaker 1A powder it burns too quick that makes sense.
Speaker 3it's okay. If the keef is in there, it is mixed in Cherry going right yeah.
Speaker 2You know what?
Speaker 1I'm saying Keef is Not that I know anything about.
Speaker 2Anyway, yeah, I got no idea, so yeah. So there's, you know tools of the trade, you know glass, not they. Pens are like usually what people get I. There's the dry herb ones. I want to try the dry. I want to try that one I've. I've never personally had them. That's something I've never cause. I've heard so many mixed bags about them and they're just so expensive.
Speaker 1They are expensive.
Speaker 2They're like I think over 300 bucks or something. What no yeah?
Speaker 1Like yeah.
Speaker 2I think they, yeah, I think I could be wrong. What?
Speaker 1I saw was about 150. Why it was 150.
Speaker 3Okay, and now, wait. So now, for me, what I know is a vape is you have the pen and then you have dry vape. Right, so then, what's the?
Speaker 1difference. It's just burning it without the oil or anything. Yeah, it's like, it's like to the point where, just under combustion you know what I mean where, just like it like roasts it basically, and then, because that's basically so like that's the thing that gives you the right temperature for it, so when you're supposed, you're smoking gotcha whether it be a blonde, a cone or a joint.
Speaker 2The part that you're light, the part where the cherry that part is vaporizing the weed that's next to it. That's the actual part. That's the actual part that you're getting the THC from. You're not actually getting it from the cherry.
Speaker 1No, of course that I know the cherry is-. What's coming off of it? What's burning off?
Speaker 2It's next to the cherry. What vaporizes Right? You're pulling that in, so a low temperature is better Because high. That in, so a low temperature is better, because high temperature you just get more burn. So then, what's the cherry? What is the cherry? Like the cherry is just the top of the you know it's the hottest part of the hottest part, it's the amber, but behind it is where you're getting yeah, and then that burn off the cherry right and right just burns just like a cigarette.
Speaker 3I'm like what?
Speaker 1the fuck is that?
Speaker 2I got it all right understood. That's why it makes no sense to like smoke it to the end the joint, because if you're smoking the cherry there's nothing, it's already cooked off.
Speaker 3I know what, technically, the cherry is. I'm sorry. I know what the cherry look is. I didn't know what was burning. Is what I meant. I'm like then wait a minute. If that's what's burning, right, I got it. Whether it's a boob or a hole or whatever, got you Okay, now does it burn the same in the pipe, like in a one-hitter.
Speaker 1I find that everything I've done it from is always different.
Speaker 2It's always different.
Speaker 1This is another thing you got to be careful. Some pepper and bust out some pepper man. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2So this is what I was showing you guys before is the plasma arc lighter Right. That, I think, is like the best Because, like I said, that low temp is when you start like really tasting the terpenes and the flavors Okay. You're getting like oh wow, I can taste like it.
Speaker 1You're definitely turning into a very connoisseur of such yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2That's why, when you get one called blueberry cruffin and you actually lay it at a low temperature and you do, it tastes like a blueberry pastry.
Speaker 1That's great, that's cool.
Speaker 2Yeah, it is, with a little bit of weed taste.
Speaker 3Of course that goes without saying.
Speaker 2Okay, yeah, but anyway, so I get that. Plasma arc lighter, that's the the. The second best, I think, is like hemp wick, which remember I brought that to you guys one time too, you did, you brought that. That. Yeah, it's a low temp flame, but it's still a flame, right? Plasma arc lighter, that's like I think again, that's top tier because you're getting it where you're just getting it, to its lowest combustion point. The longer you leave it on it, the more it combusts. That's how it works, right, you're basically electrocuting the bud okay, so you leave the on there.
Speaker 2The second it, it it like you could see a cherry. You let go because otherwise it flames up. So it's like the longer you leave it on there, the more it flames up. So if you can get it where it just is a cherry and let go, it's super low temp and then you're just basically you're the draws, you take off. It is what's going to make the cherry hotter you work at a dispensary.
Speaker 1Plumes dude, he's the oldest I've gotten. This is, this is my, you know this is my dream this is my neurodivergency. Wow man my special interest yeah, it's very interesting well because that's what.
Speaker 3That's what, like Tom has said too for those listening, is he wants to open up a smoke lounge, so this way you can have all the different kinds of weed there.
Speaker 2I want to teach this kind of stuff. Yeah, I want to do classes on cannabis condos. Yeah, man, that's so freaking great.
Speaker 3That's something I would love yeah, we're gonna have to look into that Once we start selling our merch and whatnot.
Speaker 2Anybody who wants to join my class, let me know.
Speaker 3Message me. Oh yeah, message yes.
Speaker 2Message Tom.
Speaker 3Yeah, we're going to have a dispensary. He's going to be the cocktail guy, so that's yes.
Speaker 2So that's Mixologist he's going to be a marijuana mixologist. Hell yeah.
Speaker 3Holy shit Blendology.
Speaker 2Yes, Right blend.
Speaker 3Yeah, well then, that would I guess make you a botanist, you know.
Speaker 2I actually see I'm so crazy with this stuff. I actually started writing down blend names of the blends I'm mixing together. Yeah, Wow, I came up with one called Jack Flash. Okay, so that is 80% Jack hair sativa blended with a hybrid of 20% runts. Ooh, Got that from Lou yeah that's right.
Speaker 1The runts, ooh, got that from Lou. Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 2The runts. Yeah, and it's a very. When you mix those two together, it's a very visual. You kind of trip out a little bit Okay, it's a very high amount of terpenylene from both those strains, okay, so it's very flashy. So Jack Harrah and the Flash, that's Jack Flash. There you go.
Speaker 3Nice, there you go.
Speaker 1That's a good one, bro. I like it. You just crossed them together, man. That's awesome.
Speaker 3Now do you have to? Sorry, I know you're getting to the next thing, but now when you turn around and you mix them, you're not mixing.
Speaker 2You know what's funny. This is the next part.
Speaker 3That's okay. Good, not being the botanist and crossbreeding the plant, you're just taking the buds and mixing them. Yeah, and the grinder, the grinder.
Speaker 2So I do a 10 pebble method. I call it Okay. Where I break off, when I break off the buds, I break them off into an equal, visually equal size and try to get 10 of those. So if you're blending, what you do is say you want 80%, you take eight of those pebbles and then 20%, as I said, the Jack Flash, 20% of the runts, and then you put it in the strainer in the grinder, in the grinder Boom boom, boom, boom, boom, pour it out.
Speaker 2You can mix it if you want with a. Sorry, that was. You heard that on my I apologize. No, it's fine, I have my phone on silent.
Speaker 3Yeah, go ahead, that's good.
Speaker 2Yeah, so, yeah, so you. So then you mix it together and then you know you have your roller tray, tray, which most people have, and then you could just you know you can take a credit card or something or anything, just something to mix it up with. It should already mix technically in the grinder Right.
Speaker 3So now here's my other, because you said what you said, so now what is the keef like with that?
Speaker 2So the keef you would just, you can. There are different ways to mix a keef in Some people. If you're just, I don't think you put it in a joint you can put it in a bowl.
Speaker 1I don't think a bowl.
Speaker 2But what I do with Keef is like when I'm loading. I like cones because they're easy. I'm not a skilled joint roller.
Speaker 3Yeah right right, right, right, I get you there. I'm a connoisseur of this stuff, but I have no skill. I can't roll it.
Speaker 2I can tell you about everything. If I have a cone loader, you know it's easy to, you know, load it in. So I would, I would tap, you know I'll put a little bit of the ground stuff and then I would put some, I would layer it, you know, put some of the keef and then you could do that. Or you can, while you have it already in the tray, you can sprinkle the keef in and it'll actually cling to the.
Speaker 3So where I was going with this is that then, when you grind it all up, after you're mixing all your different herbs, that then the keef is a mix of all those herbs. Yes, so that then You're gettinga variety of everything.
Speaker 2Because you said that you would take your keef and you would mix it up and if you're a big sativa smoker, it's going to be mainly sativa, Right?
Speaker 3So then again. So now, if you have all that keef and you're putting it in something else and stashing that, you need to be careful when you're going to smoke it, because you could be oh it's very strong. Yeah.
Speaker 1So you're going to be, like enough. Indica in it just enough to take the edge off.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1That could do it too, because you get a little less of that depending on what you say Do you smoke more? Do you smoke more indica or do you smoke?
Speaker 2tea, you do both.
Speaker 1You do it at a certain time too, because indica helps you relax and you want to sleep where the other one can make. You want to be productive and read, so I've been actually taking notes on the different blends I take and like the model or flavors Like another one.
Speaker 2I I I called it a juicy Jack Again. I Jack hair 50%.
Speaker 3Jack hair 50%, juicy J oh okay, okay, okay, so you're, so you're actually keeping track of what you're mixing at the house.
Speaker 2I'm, I'm.
Speaker 3I'm a maniac Dude. That is insane. I'm sorry to come to light, that's not a bad hobby, bro.
Speaker 2You talk about people who are autistic, that have special interests. That's me.
Speaker 3It's not a bad one to have. In all honesty, not at all. You know you're doing it and you're going to be able to.
Speaker 1You dove into that man.
Low Temperature Smoking and Health Benefits
Speaker 3Yeah, but this is a class, so I don't smoke like that at all, not even close. But you guys, you know being able to.
Speaker 1I don't do what he does.
Speaker 3No, no, no, no, no, but I'm saying that then Tom could turn around because of what he does and how he looks at it. He educates you and then that'll turn around and put you to where you're like oh. You know what? If you're talking about it now in this episode, then now people that are watching and listening that they're like oh my God, that makes so much sense.
Speaker 1Yeah, another tip too. What, yeah? And not only that, you know what you know what.
Speaker 2The other thing is too. If you have it at a low temp, you're actually sparing your lungs like a lot of tar, because when you smoke at a low temperature, you'll notice that the smoke, the actual, the ash, is more black than white, but if you smoke it with like a.
Speaker 2Bic or whatever. It's super hot. You'll notice the ash is like super white. It means it clustered everything and you don't want again the medicinal components of the cannabis. They cook off at a lower temperature than the rest of everything else. So if you're cooking at a lower temperature there's less tar Right and you're getting more out of it. So it's very important. Yeah, so that's the other thing. So big on the low temperature that makes sense it's not that you won't get high, because you will Right.
Speaker 3Well, I'm not going to lie. I didn't know that there was tar in it, and that's also why it tastes better too. Yeah, it's tar, because you're going to taste it after, because it's resin.
Speaker 2You're not tasting all the charcoal and all that.
Speaker 3See, I never would have thought that, because for me in my head is I'm just smoking the weed.
Speaker 1But if you're doing it all the time, every day, then that's an issue.
Speaker 2Yeah, I never would have thought about there even being tar. I know it's chain smoking, I know I know some people, I guess it's for whoever.
Speaker 1Each person is different. Okay, right, so it's going to affect them all, based on how much they're doing Gotcha. That's really what's going to come down.
Speaker 3Yeah, I never would have thought about there being tar bro. If you're a lot, so you don't really burn a lot, right.
Speaker 1Just only when you need to, and it only burns for like a few seconds that long.
Speaker 3No shit, that's wild.
Speaker 1You know what I'm saying. If you're just doing it that way and that's all you need to hit a couple of hits, boom, you feel good and you're on your way.
Speaker 3So now the tar there, if you will.
Speaker 1Like it's not like, like it doesn't leave a resin well, you can, there is, there is resin, you can get resin. The tar is the cooked resin.
Speaker 2You know that's the shit you don't want oh, so then that's not.
Speaker 3You want the resin. It's not like the afterburn, so it's not like okay, so it's not like mixing it with the keef kind of shit, and that's like what the smoke produces when Someone who like chain smoke cigarettes.
Speaker 2And they got the brown seat where they smoke every day.
Speaker 3Yeah, yeah, like the lounge chair and shit. Yeah, yeah, okay, all right, all right, I got you. You know, it's in the smoke.
Speaker 2You know what I mean. All right, but when you're at a low temperature, less of it.
Speaker 3And you won't get a lot because it's all still left on that. Okay, like a lot less, like a lot less.
Speaker 2So that's the good thing and that's why you actually taste the terpenes, because the tar carries all the afterburn and the plant matter All the nasty. Yeah, it's just like all the charcoal stuff.
Speaker 3Right, you know what I mean.
Speaker 2Okay.
Speaker 3It's all the charred shit.
Speaker 2You know what I?
Speaker 3mean yeah.
Speaker 2That's where you're getting less of that. So that's the goal is to get less of that. So that that's the goal is to get less of that right, so you're so it's healthier.
Speaker 1Come a long way now. I mean, I don't want to say healthier, but you know what I mean. Well, yeah, you're getting more out of it. You're beneficial, wise, versus the just getting, you know, catching a bus in turn, you're getting more flavor right so that's insane, bro.
Speaker 2So now, when you, the flavor is not masked by the burned crap. So so now how?
Speaker 3different. Is it smoking out of a one-hitter or out of a pipe or a bomb?
Speaker 1Well, that's just the size of something, is really all it is Like. If you're one-hitter, it's just a little bit Right, it's just to get you a quick whatever. And then you could do a pipe, which is a different bowl, and it depends on how deep you want, or pack the bowl. Do you want to put a little in the bowl or you want to pack the bowl, meaning you want to? So it's just up to how, whatever you do, the other thing is if you.
Speaker 2If it's a pipe, though, it's like if you really want to get those flavors you have to like, stay on top of cleaning it like mine. I cleaned after every use of them, right right, every I take you gotta take 90 alcohol that don't waste your money on those pipe cleaners that they sell at the head shops. They're like I mean they're not terribly priced but like you just go to Target or your supermarket and $2 or whatever and you buy the 90, I think it's called 90 plus alcohol.
Speaker 2Yeah, and it dissolves the resin left over. You got a nice clean pipe ready to go. And it doesn't taste any different depending on what you clean it with. Oh, and salt too, in course. Salt, because alcohol cannot dissolve in in alcohol. I'm sorry, salt cannot dissolve in alcohol. It's the chemical. There's actually a chemical reason for it.
Speaker 1I've looked it up yeah, so in other words, it stays behind. You see it?
Speaker 2so so the. So what happens is the alcohol melts the resin and the coarse salt. When you you shake, it scrubs.
Speaker 1So you get scrubbing action.
Speaker 2And the yeah. So it's a little trick and then you just rinse it out with water, dry it out and you're good to go. Good to go, All right, cool.
Speaker 1That's interesting.
Speaker 2Same thing with thongs and any type of smoked, you know dried pipe.
Speaker 1You didn't know, any of this.
Speaker 3Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Yo just put this in the paper and keep it moving.
Speaker 2Dude, back in the day I used to use Pepsi. Can you know? That's the? I think everybody's done the Pepsi can trick.
Speaker 3You'd have bend it, you'd poke it. Oh yeah, I've done that before. I know not of what y'all speak.
Speaker 1Yes, you think we should change man? I was saying that earlier.
Speaker 2I heard people using apples back in the day.
Speaker 1I did that too.
Speaker 3I did the apple. I never did the apple. I did the apple. I never tried the apple.
Speaker 1yeah, but to me I did the apple, I figured it out. It didn't taste anything like you know. To me it's different, you think so it did.
Speaker 2Yeah, I guess I had to guess it was a Macintosh. You think I have enough knowledge, dude? Yeah, yeah, no, absolutely. I think it's interesting. If I didn't go that deep into it, I could go a bit deeper.
Speaker 1But just think of what they're doing, like what you're just talking about, but think about all the benefits they could do medically too. It's amazing so right now, and they're doing their own blend or whatever, Right so we've done an episode.
Speaker 3We did an episode on the medicinal benefits of smoking weed, so we did that. Now we're learning about how hot to have it. You know how to smoke. What the different.
Speaker 1You know things to look for To get the best out of it, and do it safely at the same time, like I said, you know, people do this with wine.
Speaker 2People do this with craft beer. People do this with wine, people do this with craft beer.
Speaker 1People do this with different spirits like fine tequilas, fine bourbon, it's the same thing I remember back in the day when we would get it. Yeah, that's the shit. It would be in a foil and it would be so moist, yeah.
Speaker 3So moist.
Speaker 1You have to cut it with a razor. Yeah, really, yeah, yeah, really, yeah, yeah, yeah. And it would have like like they glow blue, green colors, like bright, like these hairs going in and out of it. Man, what'd you get? Oh, dude, it stunk to high heaven. Yeah, that's freaking hilarious. Yeah, no, you have to go somewhere, give them ten dollars and they, yeah, yeah, yeah, they slip it through a door. Yeah, remember that, that's what they told me anyway.
Speaker 2Yeah, go to a store. When I was in high school it was like the 90s, you know they had those little tiny bags like a nickel bag yeah they started going to the plastic bags.
Speaker 3yeah, the size of your thumb.
Speaker 1Yeah, that is freaking great and it was ground up and it had seeds. I always found the ones that I in foil.
Speaker 3Oh yeah, yeah, Wasn't that hashed, though that came in the foil, no.
Speaker 1You got it? Definitely yeah. When it was copped it came in foil.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, it was yeah.
Speaker 3That's freaking great.
Speaker 1The plastic started to come later on, right when they started doing the bags.
Speaker 3That's freaking. Yeah, no, listen, it would be cool to be able to go to a place like you're saying, you know, like with your knowledge, to have people like that, and be able to just. You know what I'm feeling.
Speaker 1Let me have this, you know, because he can go into a century and have this whole conversation with the guy for like an hour before he even makes the decision of what he's going to get.
Speaker 2So imagine if he was like the quote unquote bartender I impress bartenders sometimes. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. I the quote unquote bar time I impress bud tenders sometimes, yeah that's what I'm saying.
Speaker 3I do, so you know you're the bud tender.
Speaker 1You're the cocktail. You know what I mean. Maybe you miss your calling my friend Well no, it's not over yet.
Speaker 3It's not over yet.
Speaker 1No, that's right, you can do it at any time.
Speaker 2Yeah that'll be your part time gig.
Speaker 3I cool because I think, like you said you're, you're. One of the coolest ideas I've heard is to be able to have a, like a cigar shop but you know, a smoke shop, where you can actually go in there and hang out sinking in the chair like now. That's freaking hilarious, that is too fun. But yeah, man, to have a spot where you can actually go and smoke up from the 90s.
Speaker 2I remember that one oh yeah, yeah I was like that. Looks like someone who's.
Speaker 3Yeah, that's different.
Speaker 1That don't look like someone high. That's funny. No, definitely.
Speaker 3It's kind of cool man. Like I said, go to the, burning it when you're smoking and whatnot. Now they say you don't finish the whole joint, right, and you said that you take the extras and you put it into that glass, into that jar and whatnot oh no, I don't do that.
Speaker 2I I do with the extra grind. Oh right, yeah, you're not using anything from the actual thing.
Speaker 3You smoke what you're doing before well because I mean, like you don't smoke the whole thing, I just leave it.
Speaker 1If I burn it already, I just save it and then I go back.
Speaker 3Okay, all right, I'm not gonna break it up you know you don't need to break it up again before the show you know, you know, I'm not a I don't I.
Speaker 2I I do actually smoke more indicas because I actually use it medicinally. I have a really bad somnia um so I typically don't put much of those until, like, I have like a thing called like an infinite I don't think I mentioned it yet. I have like a thing called the like infinity jar or whatever.
Speaker 1Like.
Speaker 2I just like anything extra I put into it. It's like a blend.
Speaker 1I've done that. Yeah, everything that's in my bottom of my keep, the thing you put in a little jar for me. That's from many different kinds.
Speaker 2But I do the same thing. I have no idea. Anytime I have extra, I just put it in that jar you know, and it just collects Yep.
Speaker 3Now you were saying too, when you take the keef and you kind of like compact it, how do you do that?
Tools of the Trade
Speaker 2It's a special press with a clamp press? Oh, no way, they make like these little cranky.
Speaker 1You need a lot, though. How big does it get? You got to have a good amount. Yeah, you got to have a lot right?
Speaker 2Yeah, some people and that's the thing too there's a misconception about Keith Some people think that if you use like a, like an electric grinder, like a bullet or something, like that Right. Oh, you get a lot of Keith, but it's just actually fine ground.
Speaker 3Weed. Like I was saying before, it's not actually keef. Like keef is literally the trichomes shaved off.
Speaker 2Yeah, so that's why you need the grinder and not the blender, and that little, you know, that little screen at the bottom is all the trichomes that break off.
Speaker 1Well, it goes through the screen, it goes into the bottom of the tray Every time you pick the cannabis or touch it, it just like or hits something like.
Speaker 2Sometimes trichomes break off.
Speaker 3Now, how do you store those? So when you take it and you're cleaning out the screen, you're cleaning out your grinder.
Speaker 2Yeah, there's little Keef containers, little tiny containers for them. Is it airtight yeah airtight.
Speaker 3Yeah, they got little gaskets on them.
Speaker 2Okay, yeah.
Speaker 1Right, right, right you look at it, he's like, he's like right.
Speaker 3We're going to smoke this.
Speaker 1Keith Lewis. Yeah, it's crazy Cause it's a think about it If you just do it for a long time, right, and it's always a different strain of something.
Speaker 3Yup, and even if you get yeah, then you mix it all up and then you use it. Yeah, you know what that is, that you would forget what you have in that in your keef mix.
Speaker 2You don't know if you're high, not high, if you're walking around whatever you know, whatever you've been putting in the grinder right, you know now how long that's why if you really want to get crazy about it and that's something I actually thought about doing a second grinder and have a grinder for indica and a grinder for sativas. So I'm so when I get my keef, I have a key yeah, got more uplifting and one and a keef that's more sedating and relaxing right now how much keef?
Speaker 3do you?
Speaker 2how much takes a long time.
Speaker 3That's what I was gonna ask, like how much?
Speaker 1yeah, because it's so fine, it's very fine.
Speaker 2Yeah, because it's like okay, so if you have a brand new or cleaned out grinder, right, you grind one grinding session, you open the Keith collectors and just have a little. It's just, it looks like. Looks like a little dusting but nothing that you can.
Speaker 1Yeah, you're not even close to being able to use it, so it's probably.
Speaker 2I would say. I would say probably after like 40 rinds you want, you'd want to start scraping it out. Shut up, yeah. Yeah, I didn't even think it was gonna be that much.
Speaker 1Yeah, I mean, you could go like 10, but it would be so it just I just kept doing it, yeah, yeah, I didn't even mess with it, I just kept doing I was. My whole goal was to fill it up, yeah, yeah, and then clean it out and then you know yeah, that makes sense, it already for me.
Speaker 2Yeah, you don't want it you, unless you're using it like a lot because you know it dries out. I haven't dried it out, just like the. Really you know what I mean. That's why you want to put it in the Keef. That's why I say you put it in the Keef container so it stays locked in All right in a airtight container.
Speaker 3Wow, oh, you keep the grinder in an airtight container.
Speaker 2Oh well, you know, but it makes sense. Wow, but it makes sense because of Keep Collector Right exactly. Yeah, that makes sense, because then I was going crazy like that, because then you know I'm very I shouldn't say crazy, it's not nice. I try to move away from that word. I just I'm really into it. You know what I mean. No, it makes sense. You know a lot about it, which is pretty cool, hell yeah.
Speaker 1And I I've never delved into it that way, ever to that depth. As far as where you've gone to it, you know.
Speaker 2But I'm just like, how do I get it better? How do we get it better? I'm like a little obsessed.
Speaker 3Yeah, medicinal wise, you know I'm saying and and doing that stuff, but she'll come up with his own blend. And that's what I'm saying. Well, for sleep, like you know I said so I am officially diagnosed. There you go. But like for me, now the jersey guy blend that you know, now I have, now, you know, the degenerative arthritis, said then I'd be like tom, what should I use? You know, yeah, someone said I want to smoke out or whatever, but but that then I can turn them.
Speaker 3I'm like you know you can use this, put this in your tea or whatever. You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 2Caraphylline and linalool are two terpenes that are good for.
Speaker 1Holy, you're calling a linalool.
Speaker 3Yeah, this guy that's a floral. I'm just kidding bro.
Speaker 1I'm just kidding, bro.
Speaker 2Oh, that's where you get more of your floral scent cannabis Right. Usually it's a secondary terpene not like one of the main terpenes, right Dude.
Speaker 1Like a fucking encyclopedia. Yeah, and that's what I'm saying.
Cannabis Knowledge and Career Possibilities
Speaker 3That's crazy, that would be so freaking fantastic, like I said yeah that he could turn around and be like all right, cool. You know, try this Ken. You know, get on that one. And you know, like I said, just to slow down that the arthritis pain and whatnot, like that's what. Like I said, that's fucking awesome, bro.
Speaker 2I appreciate you for that shit, bro. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll double check. It might not be a little low, but that might be one that's good for pain, because I don't I don't never look for it well, just anti.
Speaker 3I never look for it for that well, even still that's what I'm saying the anti-inflammatories that this way, you know.
Speaker 1I don't want to be like high and falling on my like die listen they use cannabis to help people who are getting off of a drug addiction. Right, yeah, and they say it makes them easier for them to get through it versus if they go the other way and it just for some people. It works. For some people it really works really well.
Speaker 3So I'm waiting for you to turn around and get on it, Cause I'll trust what you say before you know, I trust most other people, Cause I'll just be sitting in the house, you know, reaching for butterflies that aren't there, you know, and that's I get nervous. That's know what you're free to fly. Wow, wow, here we go. That's great well. So, bro, thank you very much.
Speaker 2That was more informative. That was a fun episode for me.
Speaker 3Hell yeah, that was great. So yeah, check us out on everything this is 420 right.
Speaker 1This is what Facebook, instagram, tiktok check us out. We are going to be uploading this episode yeah why am I telling you? No, no, I think we're live.
Speaker 3Sometimes we think we're live but we're actually all live, but we're being recorded yeah, we're live in front of a studio audience in front of a studio audience.
Speaker 2Yeah, to tell everybody on the social media.
Speaker 3But no, thanks. So this episode, this is going to air 420. Yes, yep, there we go, so we're in today. Yep, so with that, peace and humptiness forever.
Speaker 1Live long and prosper and go vegan, hello, hello.
